Loblolly Pine Growth Patterns on Reclaimed Mineland: Allometry, Biomass, and Volume

چکیده
Surface lignite coal mines in east Texas are commonly reforested using loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) following mining and reclamation activities. Due to the nature of such an extreme disturbance, altered growth patterns, growth rates, and productivity could be expected. We destructively sampled aboveand belowground tissue to develop prediction equations specific to these sites. These prediction equations differed statistically from those found in the literature regarding unmined land. At the stand level, biomass and volume productivity appeared similar with young stands on reclaimed mineland performing slightly poorer than similarly managed unmined sites. Allometric partitioning of aboveand belowground biomass differed statistically from the unmined allometric model previously studied. The allometric pattern on reclaimed mineland indicated greater partitioning of biomass belowground for young stands of low quadratic mean diameter relative to unmined stands. Older stands on reclaimed mineland exhibited no allometric partitioning differences from unmined stands, indicating the normal allometric pattern is resumed for stands greater than 10 years of age.

Stand-level allometry in Pinus taeda as affected by irrigation and fertilization.
Changing environmental conditions have the potential to alter allometric relationships between plant parts, possibly leading to ecosystem-level feedbacks. We quantified allometric shifts in field-grown loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) in response to altered resource availability based on data from multiple harvests to correct for size-related changes in biomass partitioning. A replicated factoria...
متن کاملVariation in biomass distribution and nutrient content in loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) clones having contrasting crown architecture and growth efficiency
Loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) is well adapted across an extensive range of sites, is responsive to silvicultural treatments, and has undergone genetic improvement through traditional tree breeding programs, with selection based primarily on rapid growth and disease resistance. Loblolly pine clones with contrasting crown architecture provide an opportunity to better understand the mechanistic r...
متن کاملEffects of Plant Growth-Promoting Rhizobacteria on Loblolly and Slash Pine Seedlings
Loblolly and slash pine seed were inoculated at sowing with 1 of 12 different strains of plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) in the greenhouse. Time to germination and seedling densities were determined at 21 days, and seedling biomass was measured at 12 wk after sowing. All bacterial strains significantly increased the speed of seedling emergence over nontreated pine seed. By 12 wk, ho...

A 2 x 2 nutrient and water factorial experiment with four replications was installed in an 8-yr-old stand of Ioblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) growing on an infertile, excessively drained sandy site in Scotland County, North Carolina. After the fourth year of treatment, estimated stem volume increment, total biomass production, and peak leaf area index (LAI) increased 152%, 99%, and 101%, respecti...

Intensive vegetation management alters seedling growth and development in southcm pine plantations. Adequate light, moisture. and nutrients stimulate seedling stem growth and crown development. Thus rapid stem growth could deplete nutrient and energy resources required for aggressive rcot growth. Early root system expansion within the available rooting zone is critical because structural root g...
